How it is made
The Ukrainian pysanka is written (pysaty) in molten beeswax with a brass-funnel tool, the kistka. Wax covers what stays the colour it already is; the egg goes into the next dye; the wax builds up in layers until the last dye, when the whole shell is warmed and the wax comes away to reveal the drawing underneath.
The symbols, and what we can say about them
The Tree of Life, the sieve and the endless ribbon are among the recurring motifs, and each is commonly read as carrying a meaning: the tree connecting worlds, the sieve dividing good from bad, the ribbon standing for eternity.
We hold no citation for those readings, so we give them as what people commonly say, and the moment we can cite the Ukrainian Museum or the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies on it, this paragraph gets a source line like the rest of the site. A saying about pysanky and darkness, printed here in quotation marks with nobody behind it, has been removed.
